At 22 Metalworks, LLC, we don’t just handle everyday, cookie-cutter parts. Our dedicated team has helped customers in the automotive and motorsport racing sectors with oil pans, skid plates, hotrod dashboards, and related custom products. Along with our passion for racing, we’re committed to supporting customers by machining unique parts that address their specific motorsport challenges. This case study highlights our design and manufacturing services in making a unique part to resolve an oil leak.
Problem
Through a referral, we were put in touch with a customer who had a 1970 Chevelle with a Duramax diesel engine, which he used for car racing. When the car launched, it would pop a wheelie, and then upon coming back down, the car would bottom out and crack the oil pan. He was having to run a diaper under the car, as it’s not allowed to drive a leaking car onto the racetrack. The customer had a rough sketch of what he wanted, but he didn’t have the equipment or tooling to make the part himself to fix the car.
Solution
We took the customer’s sketch and drew up the part design. Upon approval, we made a single part based on the design utilizing our CAD software and Waterjet to make the actual pieces which were assembled, welded and tested by the client. Made of A36 steel with a standard metal finish, the oil pan was 28 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 8 inches tall, with a tolerance of 0.01 inches.
With a turn time of one to two weeks, we completed 20 oil pans for this customer. He was very pleased with the results, as the part fit as planned and resolved the leak issue. The completed part, an after-market pan, had applications in other hotrods or cars with diesel engines. It enhanced the performance of the customer’s Chevelle through effective oil spill prevention.
